In 10 years of Denver football, with QB Ken O'Brien at the helm, the Broncos have been good (8 winning seasons), but never great (only 2 division crowns, 4 playoffs). Despite our concentrated effort in the offseason to give O'Brien the weapons he needs, another 9-7 season just won't cut it. It's time to cut the strings and start over.
Denver is reducing itself to its core youngsters and making all other veterans available for trade.
Therefore, while the following players are off-limits -- QB Tim Rosenbach, QB Trent Green, TE Marv Cook, WR Terance Mathis, C Keith Kartz, LG Brian Habib, RT Richie Giles, RDE Paul Frase, WILB DeMond Winter, SLB Johnny Holland, CB James Hasty, CB Jeff Christy, S Steve Atwater -- all other players are available for trade.
This means the following studs, among others, are on the block:
QB Ken O'Brien - 12 yr vet, 62/62
RB Barry Word - 9 yr vet, 56/56
WR Irving Fryar - 11 yr vet, 63/63
WR Eric Metcalf - 6 yr vet, 53/53- traded
C Jim Sweeney - 11 yr vet, 76/76
LG Jared Jonas - 12 yr vet, 70/70- traded
DE Bruce Smith - 10 yr vet, 65/65
DE Chris Doleman - 10 yr vet, 45/45
~ DT Henry Thomas - 8 yr vet, 48/48 ~ temporarily off the block, unless more interest is shown in others
MLB Dave Wyman - 8 yr vet, 55/55
WLB Kevin Greene - 10 yr vet, 45/45
That's a crapload of talent, right there. The fact that we could only muster a 9-7 record with those guys on the roster is a mark of shame on our organization, and we're seeking a fresh start.
They are, I believe, the best we have to offer, but there are other vets or decent youngsters that may appeal to you. Make an offer. We'll consider young players ( <6 yrs exp.) or draft picks.
Alas, it's time for this dramatic move, but sticking our finger in the breaking dam of age with Free Agents just won't win any trophies for us anymore, and we're determined to get Atwater a ring.
