With no picks before round 5, our expectations were extremely low:
5.7 K Jeff Hall, 35/56; 37/57, +2/+1
We liked his combines and our scouting department had him underrated. He will get every chance to be our kicker this year, we already released Todd Peterson. A little bump, Hall will be our opening day kicker.
5.18 NT Antoine Simpson, 18/20; 20/23, +2/+3
Another good combine, underrated guy. We need a backup NT and hopefully Simpson can be as productive as last year's low bar pick, DE Greg Ellis (21/25, 4.5 sacks.) Simpson DOES look like an Ellis clone and has a chance to unseat Russell Maryland as the backup NT.
5.25 G Solomon Page, 15/46; 20/47, +5/+1
We wanted a backup G to groom for depth and he was the best available. Nice ratings bump here for a late 5th rounder. He makes the team.
6.20 NT Nate Hobgood-Chittick, 13/42; 15/41, +2/-1
Decent combines and we like his run defense bar; just fishing for NT depth. I was hoping for one of the two NT's I drafted to stick, so...
7.19 SS Marcus Ray, 12/48; 13/41, +1/-7
We need a 5th safety and the investment was low. Ray had decent combines and could play ST. As I suspected, his ratings have and will continue to drop. His ST bar is only 74/80, so Ray is a long, long shot to make the final roster.
I am updating (this means bragging on) a few 2nd/3rd year guys here:
1997 3.8 TE Freddie Jones, 51/51, +6/+6 over LY (He was drafted at 19/32)
Probably wins the starting TE job, I hope he continues to creep.
1997 2.7 TE Tony Gonzalez, 47/47, +6/+6 over LY (He was drafted at 27/33)
He will alternate with Jones after being the starter most of the last two seasons.
1997 5.8 G Calvin Collins, 35/37, +5/+4 over LY (He was drafted at 17/26)
He has a chance to win the starting job at RG.
1997 1.30 DE Bertrand Berry, 52/52, +4/+2 over LY (He was drafted at 31/51)
Berry's ratings might look maxed, but he still has green on his bars, so he should still grow. He will continue to start at DE.
1998 4.11 DE Greg Ellis, 24/26, +5/+4 over LY (He was drafted at 15/17)
Ellis continues to surprise me, not only with his ratings growth but his production. He will continue to rotate at DE.
1997 5.17 OLB Mike Vrabel, 26/32, +2/+0 over LY, (He was drafted at 12/31)
With 8 sacks in limited playing time (4 starts), I can't keep this guy off the field.
1998 1.16 CB Patrick Surtain, 52/62, +16/+7 over LY (He was drafted at 23/47) we were rewarded for trading up to get this guy. How high is his ceiling???
